Carton Dimensions, CBM and Volumetric Weight: A Buyer’s Guide
Measure the outside of the packed carton and record its gross weight. CBM describes space; volumetric weight converts space using the selected service’s rule. Ask the forwarder which measurements and charging basis apply.

A product can be light while its protective packaging occupies considerable space. DHL distinguishes gross weight from dimensional weight and explains that the conversion depends on the transport service. Send both packed dimensions and weight when requesting a quote; a volume calculation alone is not a freight price.
Three measurements, three meanings
Outer dimensions
Record packed length, width and height with units. Include the outer packaging; confirm the measurement basis for pallets or irregular loads.
Gross weight
Weigh the goods together with their packaging. State whether the number refers to one carton or the entire shipment.
CBM · cubic meters
Multiply length × width × height in meters for each carton. Add all carton volumes; do not multiply one size across cartons of different sizes.
Chargeable basis
Ask the carrier which actual-weight or volume rule, minimum charge and rounding convention apply to the quoted service.
A carton-volume example

Measure
Example only: one packed carton is 60 × 40 × 30 cm.

Convert
Write the same dimensions as 0.60 × 0.40 × 0.30 meters.

Multiply
0.60 × 0.40 × 0.30 = 0.072 m³ for one carton.

Add
Five cartons of that same size occupy 0.360 m³ in total.

A useful request for a freight quote

Too little information
“How much to ship 50 bags?” leaves the forwarder without the packed size, weight, route or delivery scope.
- 02
A measurable shipment
Provide carton count, dimensions and gross weight for each size group, cargo description, collection point and destination postal code. Mark estimates clearly and request confirmation after packing.
Keep the packaging protective. Reducing empty space should not mean removing protection the goods need.
Buyer questions
Is CBM the same as volumetric weight?
No. CBM measures volume in cubic meters. Volumetric weight expresses that space as a weight using a service-specific conversion. Confirm the applicable rule instead of treating one divisor as universal.
Can Yumiao confirm a shipping price from product quantity alone?
